Sadly though, a desi’s sincere quest for originality begins and ends with copying from works that are not known to other fellow desis or for that matter even himself. This way, if the work is not considered original then at least citing these exotic sources can be a claim to originality. Sometimes copying themselves over and over can also be a claim to originality.
Copying has deep life altering effects on the lives of desis. For instance, when faced with the question of choosing a profession desis just look at what the other desi did. And so we end up all these desi software engineers. For the record, its not that richer desis were smarter, they just happened to have doctor desis around them.
If confronted with a desi who blatantly copies, it is advisable to actually point it out to him. Chances are that he is blissfully unaware of the authenticity of his work. If you point this out, the desi will mostly probably thank you and resume his quest for originality. But if you point it out in the presence of other desis, he might start rattling off those exotic sources….
Yup.. you got this one right…we just love copying. But you forgot to mention another instance of the phenomenon: this blog itself!
Indeed. Every brown person copies another.
@Masale.Wallah – this fact is acknowledged in the very first line of the entry 🙂
I think that we would all like to think that we are original, but there really, is no such thing.
For instance, “Indian Chinese” food restaurants are relatively new to the States. I would guess 5-6 years old, and started with one Manhattan location. Now they are all over the place.
Desi people copy when they see something good and they know it $$$
[…] Desis take the virtue of sharing very seriously and are adept at applying it in most aspects of their lives. Sharing is fun, yes? But for desis, sharing is also about saving money which adds a whole lot more to the concept of fun. Sharing also allows them to huddle together and is a great way to check out what other desis are upto. […]
