Desis love fair/white skin color. They love it so much that they aspire for fairer skin color for their kids. Fair skinned kids are LOVED. They are paraded amongst friends and relatives with pride but with a tinge of ‘warding off the evil eye’.
However, dark color skinned kids are less fortunate. It is not uncommon for a distant aunt to surface the deep seated desire of parents yearning for better complexion for their kid. Dark skinned baby girls are more likely to disappoint such pecking scornful aunts.
This love for white skinned kids, leaves desis staring at white kids in public in the West. The staring quickly morphs into a beaming smile that is multi purposed in nature, the first one being, the obvious evolutionary response to cute baby faces.
Other purposes are less obvious. Desis appreciate the cute accent and fluency of the kid’s English, with great regret of a missed opportunity. They yearn to make eye and verbal contact with accompanying kid’s parents and tell them how lovely and cute their child is. They might even start missing their future non-bi-racial kid who, they think, might never be this cute.
PS: Cringe reaction of desi in-laws to marrying out of caste, religion or race may sometimes be appeased with the lured prospect of having a fairer skinned grand children.
PPS: ¡¡Viva Obama!! and Happy Children’s Day

Oh my god I just did this today! Stare at a cute white 3 year old! I guess I’m a desi after all!
Not always true abt the ‘cute accent’ part.. It always seems weird to hear kids at the Gurudwara dressed in ‘traditional Indian (aka ‘desi’)’ clothes talking in american accent.
My parents are the complete opposite ( they actually appreaciate people who love and cherish their melanin ) and i`m so proud of them for it =)
all brown people just need to drop this colour fixation and just live . We are all beautiful, every shade and hue .
Right on!
As a dark skinned kid I had received a lot of unfair treatments from my relatives. They were always biased towards my fair skinned cousins. It is every where. Unlike US, where speaking of skin colour is a taboo, desis openly comment about the colour and they are not ashamed to express their preference for fair skin.
In Schools fair-skinned kids would be selected to welcome chief guests in functions. They even arrange the seating to have fair-skinned pupils in front in school functions. I have even seen some parents openly criticize the skin colour of their kid. Guess it’s the human nature.
In US, I suppose people are taught to force themselves to balance the colour.
Very good, very good. Ok, ok?
Ah yes, racism is alive and well in the desi world, and a perfectly acceptable subject to talk about in mixed company. Its usually one of the first things people say when they meet me – what a lovely skin tone. Makes my stomach turn!
Yes, you can say Desi are truely Wigger(white) kid lovers, but the problem doesn’t end there, all dark skinned races like white color only such as Chinese, Africans, Indians and Hispanics and everyone in between. Indian are not an exception. There is something within the negro brain which signals a response indicating white is better, more research is needed.
It is a shame the lowly desi indians are looking at the white kids and staring at them..
when you say ‘negro brain’ do you mean dark people or negroes? I think this attraction to white is a conditioned response perpetuated (and exploited) by society over the millenia. Our caste system is a prime example.
OMG this is SO TRUE!
I’m a dark desi girl married to a white guy…and my aunt said at my engagement party “at least the kids will be fairer” and not they all love my son cos he’s lighter skinned colour than me.
and desi strangers stare at us when we are out. i mean they stared at us befor we had the kid with scornful eyes…but now they stare with a ‘distant’ look. *sigh*
yeah, most indians are fucking racist
Hold on everyone! Why are you picking on ‘desis’ on this preference for lighter skin. It is no different to whites going gaga on someone among them having blue eyes and blonde hair. You hear it all the time: “Ooh he/she’s so cute!” simply because: ‘He/she is blue eyed and blonde haired” and so on……..
