Every desi also happens to be a cultured film critic. Desis would rather enjoy sensible , meaningful (read Hollywood) film rather than the amateurish, cheesy, chick-flick kind of hindi trash that SRK is such a big proponent of. By publicly proclaiming their hatred for SRK, desis fulfill their urge of ‘being different’.
Don’t be surprised if you see throngs of desis queued up outside a movie hall playing a SRK flick. Each one of them is there not out of their own free will, but has in fact been dragged there by ‘a friend’. When a desi is forcefully subjected to a SRK film, he will use the opportunity go into deep discussions of how some talented fringe actors like <take your pick – there’s no dearth of ‘talented fringe actors’> aren’t given their due by big, bad Bollywood and how SRK is not half as good as <talented fringe actor>. If you hear sniffles during the film, its only because SRK is insulting the intelligence of some desi sitting in the audience.
Simply put, SRK just doesn’t do it for desis. And therefore his award winning spree continues to surprise all desis alike, who all think that Aamir Khan should have won all those awards that SRK won. Aamir Khan of course has a film that went to the Oscars and desis get to use the term ‘method actor’ when talking about him; which enhances their reputation of having nuanced knowledge of cinema. Note that desis residing in one part of the world attribute SRK’s baffling popularity to desis residing in some other part of the world.
You have this spot-on, like all your other posts! Though, I have to confess that SRK has been replaced by Salman Khan on my list. This switch happened when I saw him dancing on a beach, bare-chested, and draped in a fishing net (what movie was this again?!!)
>Desis would rather enjoy sensible , meaningful
> (read Hollywood) film
Eh? I’d not use those terms to describe Hollywood, but hey. Whatever.
@Chucker-Murali: I believe we’re still talking SRK here. Here’s the fishing net and the whole shebang : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmbf6q79PV4&feature=related
@metlin: ummm, one of us is missing the point here, don’t you think? or lets just ‘whatever’ it, your way! š
Nah, I was just being flip. š
I just was finding it ironic that you’d use meaningful and Hollywood in the same sentence (I kid, I kid).
Since when was Hollywood sensible or meaningful eh? Mostly a load of b******s!
Bilkul Pakka!
Very good point and so true!
I’ve added some sort of more parallel cinema actors that would qualify to fit inside the
Shabana Azmi
Nassruddin Shah
Smita Patel
Konkona Sen Sharma
And any Bengali actor will fit inside the
š
As a gori who loves Hindi films I have no cultural shame associated with loving SRK.I do have to explain this “anti SRK concept” to my newbie Bollywood fans. I tell them to not worry about the desi NRI dislike of SRK, it’s just misguided cultural shame. Just tell them how much you love Lagaan and Aamir and you’re set. I say it’s teekay to love Govinda as much as I love Atul Kulkarni. I truly believe that India produces some of the best films in the world.
All the best!
SRK is overrated, but c’mon Hollywood does not produce sensible films lol last time I checked it was all about nudity, sex, and nasty jokes that involved sex in Hollywood movies.
