Every desi wants to buy either a BMW or a Mercedes which would bring him/her unprecedented ‘image’ back home along with an album full of car pictures on orkut. But most desis, being paise pragmatic, end up buying only Hondas and Toyotas. So what do they like about this?
When desis drive to a desi store or a desi cinema in a Honda or a Toyota (mind you, there is nothing like a ‘desi driving’. It is always ‘desis driving’, thus car-pooling all the time), desis love complaining how every desi buys a Honda or a Toyota and nothing else. Self-proclaimed-fringe desis feel unique by buying other Japanese cars like Mazda. Lesser-fringe desis feel unique by buying a new Honda or a Toyota instead of a used one.

The only reason they like Honda and Toyota is related to bargain hunting/being cheap. Honda’s and Toyota’s are cheap on gas and hold resale value lol.

When I bought my car, I ran into a desi who asked, “It must be a Honda or Toyota, right?” Right. But at least, I did not buy it after aspiring to a BMW!!

Toyotas and Hondas are preferred not for mileage, etc but because they are reliable. Do not want to be scammed by all those white service guys. Let’s me spend more time with my kids to get ready fro Harvard.
There are a lot of jokes about Desis owning Honda/Camrys. Of course, I can guarantee that it’s either a Chinese/Indian party by just looking at the cars (99.5% Japanese cars) in the parking lot. Nowadays, I see Desis driving Lexus IS and RX 350/400h SUVs (me included).
However, the article could have been a little more elaborative.

LOL … my first car was Honda. Then I got into vintage Mustangs and motorcycles. I blame going to Jr. High and Highschool here in the US.
The IT professional types were really into showing off their SUVs in the mid 90s BTW.
I drive my Range Rover sport supercharged to Subzi Mundi. When people give me dirty looks, I just put my high beams on and act like a dick.
Let’s dispell some of the myths created by the posts above;
1. The average desi prefers to buy a Honda or Toyota. It is the most that they are willing to spend (Remember, we are cheap….it defines us)
2. Upper class desis who can afford to buy a Lexus are still buying a Toyota that the Chinese have so cleverly disguised and charged a rediculous markup for (other references; chinese restaurants, computer stores, opticians, etc….)
3. Those desis with the ability to buy a BMW, Audi, and even Lexus, are those likely who own their own businesses (most likely a Punjabi…..least likely a Patel or any other Guju owning a motel)
4. Desis used to buy American cars when they first got to North America (Pacers, Darts, and Chevettes were all the rage among desis, not to mention that you knew another brown family with a K car or a Tempo!). The only desis who still buy American cars, GM in particular, are Guju’s (reference: point number 3)
I am a desi woman married to a white guy for 11 yrs. Ive driven a Honda ( civic and then graduated to an accord) for the past 10 yrs. He drives a huge extended cab Ford pickup. My hubby wanted me to get a huge GMC Yukon or a Ford SUV. I refused, since I love my Honda Accord. He is puzzled and has given up pestering me to sell my car. The reason I love my car is it is reliable and has good resale value. Go Honda !!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I guess the low class Indians are doing this (Honda, Toyota) the higher end go for Lexus, and if and when they finally feel like they can go for it, they go for Mercedes….or Infinti (if you are younge) Merk S-class!

I think every person buy car/(s) which he or she likes and can afford. I disagree with fact that brown people are dumb as they are smartest of all. Desis are not only smart but also they have many top positions in society. So stop the nonsense saying that brown people are dummies or desis suck. Every person should respect their motherland. Proud to be a desi and American too.
OK hold on for this one…I have actually seen a desi guy in my area driving a … Saturn, can you believe it? He must have been socially ostracized in his community beacuse I recently saw that he switched to a used Mitsu Lancer.
Have also seen another desi guy driving a Ford Contour, but this is marginally acceptable because thats actually based on a car sold overseas called the Ford Mondeo.
